PLEUGER officially starts the Alster Fountain
- A Hamburg landmark since the 1980s
- Energy-efficient PLEUGER PMM produces the fountain
After a long winter break, the famous Alster Fountain in Hamburg was officially turned on, powered by a submersible motor pump manufactured by Pleuger Industries.
Our General Manager, Stefan Patzelt, pressed the official start button, and was joined by official representatives of the City of Hamburg including Senator Mrs. Karen Pein, the Head of district office Mr. Ralf Neubauer and Mr. Michael Maader from the operator Hamburg Wasser.
“PLEUGER – made in Hamburg – made for Hamburg. Our customers are spread over all continents, but the Alster Fountain is close to our heart, and we have supported it since the beginning”, Stefan Patzelt remarked at the ceremony.
“As a traditional Hamburg pump specialist, we are pleased to be able to power the Alster Fountain again this year with one of our most energy-efficient PLEUGER submersible motor pumps and thus contribute to the attractive cityscape of the Hanseatic city,” added CEO Anton Schneerson on the resumption of this year’s operation.
Although the fountain has been generated by an efficient PLEUGER submersible motor pump since the very beginning of the 1980s, the low energy consumption of the motor is now coming into focus against the current backdrop: thanks to the efficient PMM technology of the engine and the optimization of the pump hydraulics, consumption has fallen by a total of 26% since 2017.
The pump type of the Alster Fountain is a QT10EHM-3 + PMM8-610-4, meaning a 3-stage hydraulic system on an 8-inch permanent magnet motor. It is operated via a frequency converter and can thus be adjusted in performance via the speed. The permanent magnet motor for the Alster Fountain is a highly efficient solution from PLEUGER, which, due to its design, is superior to conventional asynchronous or induction submersible motors in terms of power consumption. PLEUGER donates the complete overhaul and maintenance of the submersible pump unit every winter, carried out at the Service Centre in Hamburg.
The fountain on Lake Binnenalster in the middle of Hamburg’s city center is one of the city’s landmarks, and a Hamburg summer wouldn’t be the same without it. After the fountain was switched off in September 2022 due to municipal energy-saving measures amid warnings of an impending energy shortage, the new start in 2023 will now raise the fountain and the spirits of all Hamburgers and fans of the Hanseatic city again.
